The town of Kestell is named after the Reverend JD Kestell, who was a descendant from 1820 settler stock, and was born in Pietermaritzburg.

Golfers can enjoy a game at the Kestell Golf Club, a 9-hole course with well maintained greens and an on-site pub and restaurant. Directions to the Kestell Golf Club, is travel east from Bloemfontein on the N5 for 300km passing Betlehem, then take the Kestell off-ramp, and from there the golf club is clearly sign-posted.
